Burton Albion 0-1 Oxford United

Burton Albion could not cross the finish line against Oxford United as they lost 1-0 at a packed Pirelli Stadium on Friday night.

A crowd of around 6192 turned up to watch the Brewers lift the title and claim automatic promotion, but Oxford had other ideas.

Albion should have taken the lead early in the second half when Lee Morris got himself into an excellent position.

However, the forward must have been overcome with nerves as he scuffed his shot wide.

The visitors frustrated their hosts all evening and deserved to take the lead in the 69th minute.

Adam Chapman sent the large contingent of away supporters into raptures with a fantastic strike from a free-kick.

The match took a sour turn with ten minutes remaining when United had Chris Wilmott dismissed for a challenge on Darren Stride.

The home side became increasingly frustrated as the minutes ticked away and Shaun Harrad summed up his sides frustration when he was shown a straight red card for a challenge on U's goalkeeper Billy Turley.

The Brewers can still claim the title this weekend if Cambridge United fail to win their match away at Salisbury, while Oxford's hopes of reaching the play-offs have received a shot in the arm with this three-point haul.

Burton bookings: Webster.

Sent off: Harrad.

Oxford bookings: Haldane, Chapman, Turley.

Sent off: Willmott.

Attendance: 6,192

Referee: R Whitton
