Histon 1-0 Tamworth

Histon secured their first win in five games as the defeated Tamworth 1-0 in the Blue Square Premier on Tuesday night.

The Stutes are virtually assured of the safety as they are 12 points clear of the relegation zone but Tamworth will be looking over their shoulders in 17th place, just five points clear of the bottom three.

Lee Smith scored the only goal in the 11th minute to secure all three points but they had to endure a nervy end to the match as the Lambs peppered their goal in search of a point.

The home side started brightly and were rewarded with the goal they had been searching for, for over six hours.

Daniel Sparkes put in an inch-perfect cross for Smith to run onto and finish past Danny Alcock.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival almost added a second but he saw his header from a Smith free-kick hit the roof of the net.

Tamworth were struggling to find their feet but almost scored a goal from nothing when Adam Bygrave slipped to allow Seb Lake-Gaskin to get a shot away. David Knight watched the ball all the way though and made an excellent save.

Charlie Sheringham then tested Alcock before Michael Wylde came close to netting an equaliser as he saw his header come back off the post.

It was almost all Tamworth in the second half and Jerome Murdock, Alex Rodman and Lake-Gaskin all had efforts on goal.

Histon were not without their opportunities though as Southam hit a rasping drive that was deflected over the bar but with no more goals it was Histon who claimed the victory, much to the delight of their home support.

Histon bookings: Booked: Sheringham, Tann, Bygrave, Tidswell.

Tamworth bookings: Murdock, C Smith.

Ref: James Adcock.
