Cambridge United were unable to make their home advantage count as they were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Southport on Saturday afternoon.
Martin Ling's side were twice denied by the woodwork, while a resolute Southport defence restricted their chances in front of goal.
U's striker Danny Wright twice came close to unlocking the Southport defence early on, while strike partner Adam Marriott fired just wide with a curling free-kick on the half-hour mark.
Southport had a narrow escape early in the second half when Conal Platt struck a dipping effort from the edge of the area which smashed against the crossbar.
The Sandgrounders' best chance of the match came in the second half when defender Earl Davis failed to convert Matty McGinn's inviting corner kick.
Cambridge piled on the pressure in the closing stages but Sam Ives saw his effort hit the crossbar, while Brian Saah's goalbound effort was beaten away by Southport goalkeeper Tony McMillan.
Cambridge bookings: Wright.
Southport bookings: Davis, Winn, Lee.
