Mustafa Tiryaki scored his first goal for Cambridge United to secure a 1-0 win over Stockport County on Saturday.
The result saw Cambridge end a four-game losing run to move onto 52 points in 13 place from 34 matches.
Stockport though tasted their first home defeat since December but remain 16th with 35 from 38 games.
The hosts had started the brighter of the two sides with both Danny Rowe and Aaron Cole enjoying good early opportunities.
But it was Tiryaki who found the back of the net after just 14 minutes as he picked up a long ball from James Jennings before powering his way to goal.
Tiryaki resisted the attentions of Jordan Rose before smashing the ball home.
Rowe had another good chance midway through the first half but his lob only succeeded in hitting the side netting.
Stockport then thought they were back in the game when U's keeper Danny Naisbitt upended Tom Elliott.
But Danny Rowe wasted the opportunity with Naisbitt saving the spot-kick.
Hatters keeper Ian Ormson kept out Tiryaki and Pugh late on with Kevin Roberts also coming close to netting deep into injury time.
