Keigan Parker converted a late penalty as Mansfield edged 10-man Cambridge 1-0 at Field Mill on Saturday afternoon.
Parker (62) cashed in after a deliberate goal-line handball by James Jennings, with the defender shown a straight red for his ultraistic but ultimately ineffective intervention.
In a gritty contest, the hosts stared promisingly with striker Louis Briscoe and midfielder Tyrone Thompson threatening early on. However, Martin Ling's under-fire charges held firm as the scoreline remained goalless at the break.
After the restart, the visitors were finally undone just past the hour as Parker netted his first goal for Mansfield following Jennings' dismissal.
With a man short, the U's could find no way back and will feel hard done by having pushed the in-form Stags with no reward.
The result leaves Mansfield - who drew 1-1 with Kettering in midweek - fourth on the Blue Square Bet Premier table, while Cambridge are in contrasting danger, second-from-bottom.
Mansfield bookings: None.
Cambridge sending off: Jennings (61).
