Play-off promotion hopefuls Mansfield and Luton played to a stalemate in a Blue Square Premier fixture at Field Mill on Tuesday evening.
The visitors were more adventurous in the opening exchanges and forged the first goal-scoring chance nine minutes in when defender Fred Murray's shot from the edge of the box skimmed wide of Alan Marriott's upright.
Asa Hall then showed a great piece of skill to beat his marker but he hit his shot straight at Mansfield goalkeeper Marriot.
Two minutes before the interval the Hatters thought they had finally broken the deadlock when Matthew Barnes-Homer's cross found its way to Jake Howells who poked the ball into the back of the net. However, the effort was ruled out for offside and the score remained goalless at half-time.
The home side finally came into the contest in the second period when Rob Duffy drove the ball into the area for Louis Briscoe who failed to direct his effort on target.
Stags midfielder Ryan Williams then saw his powerful effort blocked while Duffy was felled in the box by Luton's Adam Newton but no penalty was awarded.
The result moves Luton up to fourth in the league standings while Mansfield remain in seventh.
