Brian Wake
A Brian Wake brace gave Gateshead a much-needed three points as they beat play-off challengers Mansfield 2-0 at Field Mill.
The Stags were looking to impress in front of a bumper crowd, but it was the visitors who had the more promising start as Carl Jones headed just wide from a Darren William's free-kick.
The Heed then stunned the home crowd into silence in the fifth minute when Wake's effort from just outside the area left the keeper with no chance and he made it 1-0.
Rob Duffy had the home side's best chance of the opening period with a snapshot, but he failed to trouble Paul Farman in the visitors' goal.
But it was the Tynesiders who were in the ascendancy for much of the game and Wake and Graeme Armstrong both missed chances to double their side's advantage just before the break.
Wake then wrapped up the game for the visitors just after the interval when he ran on to Mark Robinson's ball over the top and blasted the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
