Tuesday's North and South Wrap

Newport County and Bath City kept their play-off dreams alive in the Blue Square South while Southport and Burscough recorded single-goal wins.

Blue Square North

Barrow 1-1 Kettering

Barrow came back from a first-half deficit to earn a share of the spoils with league champions Kettering Town at Holker Street.

The Poppies broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when Chris Bearsdley netted from the penalty spot and the hosts drew level in the 68th minute thanks to Chris Thompson's well placed penalty kick.

After this latest result, the Bluebirds find themselves in fifth place on the Blue Square North table with 70 points from 40 matches.

Blyth Spartans 1-2 Solihull Moors

Solihull Moors enhanced their chances of survival with a fairly comfortable win over fellow relegation battlers Blyth Spartans at Croft Park.

The Moors claimed the lead after 11 minutes through Andy Ducros and the former Coventry City trainee popped up again in the 40th minute to bag his second of the evening.

The Spartans battled valiantly but Gary Brown's 90th minute consolation goal was not enough to stop Solihull from claiming all the points.

Blyth now find themselves sitting uncomfortably close to the drop zone with 43 points from 40 games at this crucial stage of the campaign.

Southport 1-0 Alfreton Town

Gary Brabin's Southport maintained their push for a promotion play-off place with a hard-fought win over Alfreton Town at Haig Avenue.

The Sandgrounders took the lead on 74 minutes as Michael Rae collected a superb pass on the left wing and fired a low shot in from the edge of the box.

Southport are now just two points behind Barrow with a game in hand while Alfreton have slipped closer to the dreaded drop zone with 45 points from 40 fixtures.

Workington 0-1 Burscough

Burscough have narrowly missed out on the race for a playoff berth despite recording a narrow victory over Workington at Borough Park.

A solitary striker from Allan Smart just before the half-time break was enough to seal all three points on Tuesday night but the result was overshadowed by the fact that Barrow played to a draw with league champions Kettering.

Although they still have a mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs, their poor goal difference will do them no favours at the end of the campaign.

Blue Square South

Bath City 3-1 Thurrock

Bath City claimed fifth place on the Blue Square South table with a comfortable win against mid-table Thurrock at Twerton Park.

The Romans drew first blood after 32 minutes through Chris Holland and doubled their tally in the 63rd minute thanks to Dave Gilroy.

Gilroy stepped up to coolly slot home a penalty just seven minutes later before Phil Anderson nicked a consolation goal just before the final whistle.

Bath find themselves on the same goal difference as Newport but have played one extra game and have a better goal difference.

Cambridge City 0-2 Newport County

Newport County maintained their push for a promotion play-off berth with a comfortable win over Cambridge City on Tuesday evening.

Peter Beadle's side collected all three points with another solid performance on the road and have the sights firmly set on fifth place.

The Exiles broke the deadlock just before the first-half interval thanks to Charlie Griffin and Andy Gurney doubled their advantage with a 71st minute finish.

With Bath also picking up three points in midweek, Beadle's men will have to wait for the next round of fixtures for the chance to break into the play-off places.
