Kirkup open to Workington return

Blue Square North club Workington have been given the green light to go ahead and make a move for defender Dan Kirkup following his release by Carlisle United.

The teenage centre-half was recently released by the Cumbrians and has revealed that he would relish some regular first-team action next term.

"I've really enjoyed my time at Reds," the Hexham-born defender told the News & Star.

"It's probably due to playing on a Saturday at 3 o'clock where the result matters.

"Playing reserve team football at Carlisle, the result doesn't matter as much. I'm happy to be playing first-team football.

"This is a tough league, and you've got to be a lot stronger, and there's a lot more ball in the air. At Carlisle there's more football. I'm not even 20 yet, so there's still a lot of learning to do."

However, the Reds will almost certainly have to battle for Kirkup's signature with a number of Blue Square Premier clubs reportedly tracking his progress.
