Reds reject ground-share option

The ongoing battle between Workington and Tesco continues as the Blue Square North outfit refuses to move from Borough Park.

The grocery retail chain has offered the Allerdale council £18 million for the land to build a new supermarket. If the council were to sell, it would give them the necessary funds to transform the town's sporting landscape.

The council are still deciding on two options. One being the erection of a new 10,000-seat stadium on the current Derwent Park site, to be shared by the Reds and Workington Town RL Club. The second would lead to the upgrade and development of the existing football and Rugby League stadiums to a higher standard.

The Reds are keen on the latter option and are hoping the council adopts it, however, chairman Humphrey Dobie disagrees.

He told Times and Star: "We are not going to ground-share, so if the council is going down that route, it's the end of our involvement, and we'll start to look for other sources to do up Borough Park."

Dobie is adamant that the proposed move to the new facility would be 'completely ludicrous' and would result in Darren Edmondson's side no longing having control over their own affairs.
