Reds welcome Nicholson boost

Blue Square North club Workington have been buoyed by the return of prodigal striker Tony Nicholson to regular first-team action.

The hitman chose to leave the Reds prior to the start of the season in favour of playing in the Workington Sunday League and Tesco Cumberland County League.

But Workington boss Darren Edmondson has invited the speedy forward - who impressed in his debut season back to Borough Park.

And Nicholson has rewarded the mentor's faith by putting in a gutsy performance as a sub in the club's 1-1 draw at Southport.

Edmondson told Non League Daily: "Tony has been training with us and had a couple of outings with the reserves in the Lancashire League.

"I brought him into the squad for the game at Southport when Matthew Berkeley dropped out with injury and he got five minutes at the end.

"He's a young player with potential who impressed a lot of people at the club last season.

"His pace is a great asset and I'm happy to give him a chance to settle back into the squad and see how things go."

However, Edmondson conceded that his charges were disappointed not to walk away with all the spoils against the Sandgrounders.

He added: "I think the lads should have been very disappointed that they didn't get all three points because we were the better side for a long time.

"I'm just upset about the goal we conceded. It was another one which we should have defended better.

"Overall, though, I thought we did well and against a side pushing for a promotion play-off place it was a very good effort.

"It also stretches our unbeaten run to four games and that's something I want to see us build on between now and the end of the season."
